Endoscopy & Gastroscopy
At Mayes & Scrine we have a variety of endoscopes that allow our vets to diagnose and manage conditions at the clinic or out at clients’ yards.
Gastroscopy
Our new 3.3m long gastroscope enables visualisation of the horse’s stomach and proximal duodenum. Gastric ulcers may affect 1 in 3 horses, with signs including poor performance, behavious changes and weight loss. Gastroscopy is the only way to accurately diagnose ulcers and guide treatment.
Videoendoscope & fibre-optic endoscope
Endoscopy can be useful for visualisation and obtaining samples for the diagnosis of a variety of conditions, including:
- Upper respiratory tract
- Guttural pouches
- Lower respiratory tract (tracheal wash & bronchoalveolar lavage)
- Bladder (cystoscopy)
- Uterus (hysteroscopy)
Working with specialist consultant we also have access to dynamic endoscopy which allows visualisation of the horse’s upper airway during exercise and is extremely useful for diagnosis and surgical planning in these cases.
